Dr. A.C.Paul

(G V1, Br 1)

Paul (Paulosekutty) was born as the youngest son of Chacko-Annamma couple on 4th July, 1939. He had his primary and secondary education in the native village school at Kadungamangalam and higher secondary education at SBHS, Tripunithura. After passing SSLC in 1956, Paul joined Maharajas College, Ernakulam for Pre-University. He passed with distinction and secured admission for B.Sc (Chemistry) in the same College and passed the degree in 1960, in first class.

Paul soon obtained placement in the prestigious Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Trombay, as Junior Scientist.

Dr. Paul’s pioneering research work in the nuclear reactor CIRUS earned him the Masters Degree from Bombay University, in 1966. Later, he switched over to environmental studies and natural radioactivity and then got transferred to his native place to head the Health Physics Unit & Environmental Radiological Laboratory, at Alwaye. He undertook systematically study of the pollution in the pristine Periyar River, way back in 1970. The findings of his studies, published in International journals, formed the basis for pollution abatement steps in Periyar and other Rivers in the country. On the basis of these studies he was awarded PhD degree by Bombay University in 1980. People of his native village accorded a warm reception to him for this prestigious achievement.

Dr. Paul undertook many national and international research projects in environment and radiation. His first overseas assignment was in 1984, when he represented India at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in a Research Coordinated Project of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In view of his original and outstanding scientific contributions Dr. Paul was given the first radiation safety & environment award of the Indian Association of Radiation Protection. Later, in 1988, Dr. Paul served as an expert of IAEA in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Dr. Paul and his team conducted detailed radio-ecological studies at the coastal areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. He was also associated with the epidemiological studies at the coastal areas of Kerala in association with RCC Trivandrum. He was member of many expert committees on safety, environment and radiation. He was also the Chief Scientific Investigator of an IAEA (Vienna) project from 1997. He retired from service in 1999.

Dr. Paul’s post retirement assignments included, Environmental Faculty, Board of Studies, CUSAT; Radiation Expert, Indian Rare Earths Ltd; Member Safety Committee, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, etc. He has published a vast number of scientific papers in the national and international journals, numbering over 150. A search in the internet reveals his vast contribution to world of science in the areas of Radiation, Environment, Safety, Pollution, etc. His popular articles based on science, spirituality, Bible episodes, etc are regularly published in science and religious magazines.

He served in the Church Renovation Committee during 2004-2005.

Dr. Paul is associated with the founding of Alunkal Family Fellowship since 1995, along with other senior members of the family. He was responsible for starting the AFF Bulletin (now AFF Newsletter) and AFF web-site. He was elected the Working President of AFF in 2003 and became its President in 2005, a post he is holding presently.  Under his guidance AFF became a Registered Society with a revised bylaw, giving added thrust to the Fellowship in the area of social and charitable activities. He is currently leading research into the ancestral and heritage aspects of the Family.

Dr. Paul married Smt Lovely (see personal profile-Part-1) of Kunnathuparambil family, Allapra (Perumbavoor). Paul-Lovely couple has one son, Arun. Smt. Reshmi of Manalikunnel family (Vadakara) is his daughter-in-law.

Prof. A.V.Paul

(G V1, Br 11)

A.V.Paul (Baby) was born on 10th June, 1939 as the second son of Varghese-Kunjumma couple, in Kandanad. He had his primary and secondary education in the LP and UP Schools at Kandanad. He passed SSLC from the Govt. Boy’s High School, Tripunithura in the year 1956 and joined the Maharaja’s college for Pre-University course. Paul continued his studies in the same college for BA (economics). After obtaining the degree he enrolled for Post Graduate course and passed MA (economics) in 1963.

Prof. Paul joined the St. Albert’s college as a lecturer in economics in 1963. The professional carrier of Professor Paul spanned 31 years. His steady rise in carrier, from a lecturer to the Head of the Department in the same college, is a long saga of hard work, dedication and professional excellence. Prof. Paul is considered by his students as an ideal teacher, a trait he acquired from his ancestry. He is soft spoken, unassuming and earnest. His unblemished carrier officially came to its logical end in 1994, when he retired from service.

He had a unique distinction of serving in NCC for 20 years and rose to the rank of its Lt. Commander. He got the Presidential award for meritorious service in NCC and was Honorary Commission as Major.

After retirement Prof. Paul served as a faculty in Bharat Mata Institute of Management for MBA course, till 2009. Prof. Paul’s contribution to the field of Economics is very significant as he has 15 text books to his credit.

Prof. Paul was associated with AFF right from its formative years, serving as its Secretary till 2002. His association helped AFF to grow in stature and make it a vibrant entity.

Prof. Paul married Smt Valsa of Kottoor family at Mulanthruthy. Paul-Valsa couple has 2 children. His daughter, Smt Shibi is married to Shri Nebu Paul, Aliyattukudiyil house and son Shri Eldo is married to Smt. Sona, Padayattil House.


Mr. Avira Varghese

(Gr V1, Br. 11)

Avirah Varghese, popularly known as Varghesekutty was born as the youngest son of late Mr. A. A. Avira and late Mrs. Sosamma on 29. 09.1944. He had his primary education at Kandanad, followed by high school education at Tripunithura. Subsequently he joined the Kannan Devan tea company and later obtained placement in the Indian Rubber Board, in 1969. He retired from the Rubber Board in 1969 as Section Officer.

Varghesekutty married Lilly in 1975 (see personal profile of Lilly). The ancestral house of Varghesekutty at Kandanad was the venue of the first Annual General Body of Alunkal Family Fellowship. From that onwards, the house of Varghesekutty hosted several meetings of the Fellowship and the house has been chosen as the Registered Office of the Fellowship. As a sincere hard worker and organizer Varghesekutty rose from the post of Treasurer of AFF to the high position of Executive President of the Organization. Sincerity and hard work are his great character traits. Varghesekutty is also a Patron Member of the organization. He is also a prominent social figure at Kandanad and serves in many other voluntary organizations there.

Varghesekutty- Lilly couple has only one daughter Jisha, who is married to Mr. Jobsy Thomas, the Chief Manager of MS Harrison Malayalam- a Limited Company. The grand children of Varghesekutty, Meghna and Naina are very gifted in artistic talents, whose stage performances are the major attractions of the AFF Annual Meets.


Mr. John M Alunkal

(G V1, Br 1)

Mr. John M Alunkal (Johnkutty) was born on September 1st , 1946 as the elder son of late Prof. A.O. Mathai and late Mrs. Martha Mathai. He started his school education at Kandanad and later moved to Trivandrum. He did Pre-degree in Maharajas College Ernakulam and opted for engineering course at the Regional Engineering College (REC), Calicut. Johnkutty graduated in 1968, specializing in Electrical Engineering. A few months later, in 1969, he went to USA and joined the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and obtained Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1970.

Johnkutty stayed in USA ever since, working for several High Tech companies, such as Burroughs corp, GTE, Data General, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard (Compaq) and so on. He made significant contributions in Computer design (hardware, software, and testing). Starting as an engineer, he climbed the professional ladder to senior management levels. During his carrier he also published technical papers, related to his field of work. He lived in different places in USA such as Chicago, Detroit, Boston and Houston. Presently, he is retired from service and lives in Houston.

Johnkutty married in India in 1976. He has two daughters – Martha and Maya. They both are working in US.

Johnkutty is an avid reader of history, anthropology, etc. He is well versed in Indian history and ethnicity, in addition to cultural and heritage aspects. Fueled by these interests he turned into a globe-trotter, having visited more than 36 countries the world over.

Johnkutty is an expert member of the Heritage Committee of Alunkal Family Fellowship. He has provided many inputs to the family heritage studies and has wetted some of the unique findings of the AFF Heritage Committee.

All members of our Karote family branch are settled in USA and Johnkutty co-ordinates them on behalf of AFF. In view of his abiding trust, responsibility and support to AFF, Johnkutty has been nominated as the Patron Member (Hon.) by the Executive Committee in March 2014.
